How to Embrace Change, Stay True to Your Values, and Create a Future That Works for You

For today’s discussion, I invite you to define “this” as any major shift you see for yourself in the coming months—or even years. Maybe you’re reworking your career, helping your children transition into independent adulthood, managing responsibilities for aging parents, preparing for retirement, or navigating a significant life change.

When faced with these transitions, our instinct to control outcomes kicks into high gear. We want our plans to work out just right, yet life has a way of surprising us.

Many of us believe that by a certain age, we’ll have everything figured out. Let me set the record straight: That’s a myth. Life continuously presents new challenges, and what worked yesterday might not work today. The added pressure? Social media makes it seem like everyone else has their lives perfectly polished and planned. But let’s be real—much of what we see online is far from reality.

Finding Your Unique Path

It’s valuable to learn from those who have walked similar paths before us. However, their advice doesn’t always account for your values, your history, and your unique experiences. That’s where your focus should be—on mapping out a path that truly works for you.

For example, let’s consider the stage when your children are fully launching into adulthood. The college years went well, new routines were established, and after a brief stint at home to secure a job, they’re now out in the world on their own.

What’s Next for You?

This is the perfect moment to reflect on your priorities:

  • Do you want to continue providing emotional or financial support for your newly independent adult (keeping in mind the brain isn’t fully developed until the late 20s)?
  • Or is it time for you to embrace a new adventure—maybe even heading off-grid on your bike? Curious what that might look like? Here’s an example.

The key is simple: To make the right choices for you, you need a deep understanding of what aligns with your values and what doesn’t.

I’ve worked with people who couldn’t imagine not being hands-on with their adult children’s transition. I’ve also worked with just as many who feel they’ve provided a solid foundation and are ready to focus on their own next chapter.

Three Questions to Help You Navigate Change

  1. What is my ultimate goal? Can I refine it even further?
  2. How can I meet my needs while being considerate of those around me?
  3. What have I admired (or cringed at) in others’ approaches? How can I apply those insights to my own journey?

Even when we see change coming, it’s rarely easy—and often unwelcome. But here’s the good news: How you navigate change is within your control. With a shift on the horizon, now is the time to start planning your next move.
